Dear Madam or Sir,
When a child has their birth registered, the information is entered
into a book and I can subsequently request a copy certificate of
that entry.
Can you tell me whether, following the register entry, any of this
information (even if it is just the Register or Certificate number)
is passed or shared with any other Government Agency or Department,
either in electronic or paper certificate format; and if so; the
name of this Department or Agency.
Yours faithfully,
Brian: Bryshell

General Register Office

Dear Mr Bryshell,
Thanks for your enquiry relating to information following birth
registration.
Following a birth registration there is a statutory requirement for the
registrar to send a listing of births to their local education authority
and to the Health Authority (PCT), if these authorities choose to request
such returns. These returns will show the details recorded relating to the
child, the parents and the informant (the person who has attended to
register the birth). The registrar also provides a copy of each birth
entry to ourselves at the General Register Office in order to enable us
to compile the national record for England and Wales.
We then provide all information collected at birth registration to the
Statistics Board; and additionally, a copy of each birth entry to the
National Health Service.
We do not supply information about certificate numbers : these are used to
uniquely identify each certificate issued.
I hope this information answers your query.
Yours sincerely,
Selwyn Hughes
