Dear Mr Whittle

Re:  Freedom of Information Act request – Bin Collections

Thank you for your e-mail which was received by the Council on 20 June
2011.  Please accept apologies for the delay in responding.

I am advised that the Council’s response to your information request
regarding bin collections is as follows:

How many complaints have there been relating to waste collection?

In 2010/11 (April-March) the number of complaints received by this
Council relating to the waste collection service only was 323.

How many streets were missed by refuse collectors during 2011?

Unfortunately the waste department does not record the number of streets
missed. Instead members of the public can report a missed collection by
contacting the Council. Missed collections can be reported to the Council
either via calling the contact centre, visiting a Council office or by
completing an electronic form via the Council’s website. The Council does
record the number of missed collections reported in this way and
since 1^st January 2011 to 30^th June 2011 the Council has received
reports of a total of 1594 missed collections.

What is the Council policy relating to missed collections?

Missed bins should not be reported before 4pm on the day of collection
this is to ensure that the crew has not been held up by road works a
vehicle breakdown etc. Reports of a missed bin should be made to the
Council either by visiting an office, calling us on 0345 605 3014 or by
completing an electronic form via the Council’s website. Missed bin
reports should also be made as soon after collection day as possible and
no later than five working days following a collection.

The Council has a target to respond to all reported missed
bins within five working days.  If the Council has not serviced a street
due to road works, blocked access etc it prioritises this work to be
undertaken first. In periods of bad weather especially if roads have not
been gritted, the Council will only service those roads where it is safe
to do so.

Under the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005, if you
wish to re-use any information that you have been provided with by the
Council for any purpose that is not your own individual use, you require
the written consent of the Council. In order to make a request you should
write to the Council for permission to use the information and provide
your name and address and state the purpose for which the document is to
be re-used.

If you are unhappy with the way the Council has dealt with your request,
please follow the Complaints Procedure that is enclosed.
