Bendy (Articulated) Buses - Withdrawal

James Mack made this Freedom of Information request to Transport for London

Transport for London did not have the information requested.

From: James Mack

16 August 2010

Dear Transport for London,

Please confirm:

1. The additional costs to date associated with withdrawal of bendy
(articulated) buses from those routes where bendy buses have been
replaced with conventional single-decker or double-decker buses;
and

2. The additional costs that it is estimated will be incurred from
the withdrawal of bendy (articulated) buses from routes where it is
planned to replace bendy buses with conventional single-decker or
double-decker buses.

For the purposes of this request, the additional costs should be
calculated as costs over and above those that would be incurred in
re-letting the route with existing or replacement bendy buses. (For
example, if the contracted cost of running route 507 with bendy
buses was £10 million per year and the contracted cost of route 507
with single-decker buses is £2 million per year, the additional
cost if £2 million.)

Yours faithfully,

James Mack

Mr J Mack

[FOI #44800 email]

Dear Mr Mack

Thank you for your email received by TfL on 16 August. You have asked for
information about the costs of withdrawing articulated buses and your
request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act.

The tender results for routes 38, 501 and 521, the three routes from which
articulated buses have already been withdrawn, are available on our
website at
[1]http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/businessandpar....

The result for route 18, due to change to double-deck operation in
November this year, is available at
[2]http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/businessandpar....

The remaining routes are 12, 25, 29, 73, 149, 207, 436 and 453. As results
for these are announced, they will be published on our website at
[3]http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/businessandpar.... We
are not able to estimate the costs of future contracts, as these are
determined by the tenders submitted by our operators.

When the contracts for these routes have been tendered, we have not
required operators to submit quotes for maintaining articulated buses.
Therefore, we are unable to provide a figure for the difference in the
cost of running non-articulated buses on these routes.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response, please read the attached
help-sheet entitled ‘Your Right to Appeal’.

Yours sincerely
