"Beating cervical cancer - the facts"

Dear Sir or Madam,
Please could you let me know the print run figures and dates for
the original document "Beating cervical cancer - the facts",
reference number 288939_HPV_Factsheet.pdf.
If any of them were recalled, how many?
Please would you also inform me of the date of any print runs which
have included the revised safety information, as per my FOI
question dated 1st October 08 which pointed out the error in the
statistics. The reference number online became
288939_HPV_Factsheet2.pdf.
Could you also let me know whether an Erratum/Corrigendum message
was ever sent out to make the safety information clear and
accurate? If so, please inform me of the date, the wording and the
number of copies sent out.
This is your corrected wording on page 13:
"...and joint pain were reported in less than one in ten but more
than one in 100 people. A full list of potential adverse reactions
can be found on the..."
The original wording was "...and muscle aches were reported in less
than one in 1000 people."
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,

Dear David Winks,
Thank you for the information.
So at last we know that the corrected mistakes in the HPV leaflet
were not even communicated by the DoH to PCTs or GPs, let alone the
600,000+ families this year.
We look forward to an official announcement from the new Health
Minister or new Health Secretary that you have had to make those
changes; also that all those 60,000 printed copies of "Beating
Cervical Cancer - The Facts" still in circulation are factually and
statistically wrong on page 13.
Perhaps the new Minister of State for Children, Young People and
Families would inform people through official channels too, now
that she realises that her facts and figures all this time were
vastly understated. The list of expected side effects was also
misleading and very incomplete. I was even asked to provide her
with the web address(es) for the old versions which were still on
NHS websites last weekend after all this time! You may recall that
I first pointed out the errors in a previous FOI question via this
public website as long ago as October 1st last year.
Meanwhile I await her response.

Thank you again,

Dear Ms Filby,
Thank you for your further email of 13 June about the HPV leaflet, and I
apologise for the delay in replying.
There is currently no plan to recall the existing factsheets as these were
initially provided to girls who have now received their vaccination.
However, the patient information leaflet lists the side effects of
Cervarix.
In the interim, the Department has alerted health professionals to the
amendment in the factsheet, which is now available online and will not be
reprinted in hard copy. The alert was sent out in the Vaccine Update
June/July edition and can be found at:
[1]www.immunisation.nhs.uk/Professional_information/Vaccine_Update.
I hope this reply is helpful.
Yours sincerely,
David Winks

Dear David,
It was good of you to send me the link to the June-July Vaccine
Update but really, the brief reference to the Cervarix vaccine
corrections was very hard to spot, in amongst so much about swine
flu.
I doubt whether it was an effective strategy to inform busy health
professionals with that method. Would the Department of Health
please note, urgently and permanently, that you do still have the
OLD, incorrect version on your web server? This is also the case
with West Sussex, West Kent and Northern Ireland. It is tiresome to
have to keep pointing it out. Today I have added WARNING comments
beside their Google references and frankly, I am not willing to
remove them until I am satisfied that the Dept of Health have put
things right.
Yours sincerely,
Grace Filby

We are now a year on from the start of the Cervarix programme and despite all my efforts pointing out a very basic mistake, the false safety figures have still not been removed from Government websites - namely the Northern Ireland Dept of Health and West Kent PCT.
Please refer to http://www.relax-well.co.uk/HPV.html for my photo album illustrating the long saga, featuring ex-Health Minister Dawn Primarolo and Shadow Health Minister Mark Simmonds.
