Beacon Park revamp costs
Alistair HArris made this Freedom of Information request to Lichfield District Council
The request was successful.
From: Alistair HArris
18 April 2011
Dear Lichfield District Council,
Hello. Nice weather today. Not been as sunny as it was at the
weekend though. Never mind, they reckon it’ll be 23oC tomorrow –
that’s really hot!
With the recent upturn in the weather, I decided to visit Beacon
Park at the weekend, and I noticed that the area which had until
recently been fenced off has now been largely opened.
Contained therein are some new rides, much different to those I
experienced as a child growing up in Lichfield. Those rides, back
then, were way more exciting.
Who can forget the Death Slide? What a rush!
The new rides all look lovely and wooden but I had the misfortune
to see a Daily Mail story on Monday where the Daily Mail had
interviewed about three disgruntled parents who all said the park
was “rubbish” now.
These parents came from Pelsall and Burntwood, so their indictment
- “rubbish” – is far worse than what we in Lichfield know as
“rubbish”. For someone from Pelsall to think something is rubbish,
it must be really, really rubbish. Much worse than Lichfield's
rubbish stuff, such as fortnightly bin collections or the Garrick.
Pelsall rubbish is total rubbish, the kind that causes smog and the
greenhouse effect. These disgruntled parents were obviously used to
disappointment, where they’re from, but now even Lichfield has
managed to undermine their already rock-bottom esteem. The irony
being, Lichfield has done that using actual rocks, sticking out the
ground.
All the parents wanted was a slide or something. You gave them
rocks.
What a situation this is.
So, given this information (that is, the information I've written
about above) simply as some background colour to my request, I’d
like to ask the following.
I’d also like you to answer the following questions, under the
various requirements of the Freedom of Information Act (you know
the one). I’m not asking these questions simply for my own
amusement, I’d like some answers.
Here goes then:
• How much money has Lichfield District Council spent on revamping
Beacon Park in total?
• How much of that money was spent on consultation with residents?
How much was spent on consultants/developers/artists to draw up the
plans? How much has been spent on actually carrying out the work?
• Please provide a breakdown of the costs of this work in Beacon
Park to show the amount spent on:
* improving the playing area (ie the rides);
* buying rocks
* deciding where to place said rocks
* inspecting said rocks to ensure they are safe
* cleaning (ie cleaning out the brook, cleaning the statues,
cleaning rocks);
* landscaping (ie the removal of the old bowling green area, work
on the new bowling area, and work on new pathways through the
park);
* new buildings (ie the revamped bowling pavilion, the revamped
changing rooms and the revamped old hut near the crazy golf)
• How much money was paid to the designers of the new park for the
redesign?
• How many companies tendered to provide work at the Park? Please
include details of separate tenders if these were broken down by
areas of work (ie construction, installation of new play equipment,
landscaping, cleaning)
• Which was the cheapest tender for this work, and how much was the
quote?
• Why are there no slides in the Park?
• What happened to the Death Slide? When was it removed and why?
• Is it true someone died on the Death Slide? Or were they just
knocked out?
• What happened to the Skate Ramp that used to be at the Park? Did
it burn down? What happens when wood burns?
You don’t have to answer the 'what happens when wood burns?'
question if you don’t want. I can Google that.
Thanks anyway guys.
I look forward to receiving the answers with my mouth agog with
salivation,
Yours faithfully,
Alistair Harris
