Richard Taylor made this Freedom of Information request to Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
The request was successful.
From: Richard Taylor
19 August 2010
Dear Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council,
Section 10.25 of the BBSRC studentships guide[1] states:
"Students may, however, bring to BBSRC’s attention any situation
where they consider that they have not had access to appropriate
procedures."
I would like to request:
* Any policies and procedures which exist within the BBSRC setting
down how reports made under this provision are to be dealt with.
* The appropriate contact point for students to use when making
such reports, and which post holder or team the reports would be
directed to.
* Details of reports made under this provision and the actions
taken by the BBSRC, including information on any systemic changes
to institutions' procedures which have been prompted by the
reports.
Many thanks,
--

1. The BBRSC has no policy or procedure on dealing with reports from students of institutions lacking appropriate procedures.
2. Complaints under s.10.25 of the BBSRC studentships guide should be registered with the BBSRC Complaints Officer:
http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/organisation/poli...
3. No systemic changes to institutions' procedures have been prompted by the reports from students of institutions lacking appropriate procedures.
I thought it was shocking that the identities of the institutions involved had been redacted on the grounds of commercial confidentially. The public interest test for that redaction was unbalanced as the public interest in disclosure - allowing students, and other funding bodies, to avoid problematic institutions was not considered.
