BBC/TV Licensing Hospitality

Peter Jones made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

The request was successful.

From: Peter Jones

31 December 2010

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I am making this request for information under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I believe that the BBC and/or the companies operating under the "TV
Licensing" trade mark raise awareness of TV licensing-related
legislation by advertising in publications aimed at Magistrates.

Furthermore, I believe that the BBC and/or the "TV Licensing"
companies hold information/training sessions about TV
licensing-related legislation for Magistrates.

Under the terms of the 2000 Act, please answer the following:

1. Is my information correct, that the BBC and/or "TV Licensing"
companies advertise and offer TV licence-related
information/training sessions aimed at Magistrates?

2. Please describe the nature of any hospitality or benefits in
kind the audience receives at one of these information/training
sessions. To be quite clear, do the BBC and/or "TV Licensing"
companies provide any free food, drink or gifts to the audience? Do
the BBC and/or "TV Licensing" companies provide free alcoholic
drinks to members of the audience? Is there any attendance and/or
registration fee payable for these training/information sessions?

3. What was the total cost of TV licence-related advertising in
publications aimed at Magistrates in each of the years 2008, 2009
and 2010?

4. What was the total cost of TV licence-related
information/training sessions aimed at Magistrates in each of the
years 2008, 2009 and 2010?

I look forward to full and candid disclosure, in accordance with
the spirit of the Act.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Jones

Dear FOI Enquiries,

I note in your response the apparently unambiguous statement that:
"TV Licensing does not advertise in publications aimed at
Magistrates".

What appears to be TV Licensing promotional material featured in
the Summer 2010 edition of The Magistrates' Association newsletter.

If I am understanding your quoted response correctly then the
BBC/TV Licensing did not sanction the publication of this material,
or offer any renumeration to the Magistrates Association for its
inclusion in their newsletter.

Is that correct? Or would you like to reconsider that part of your
response?

In case you are in doubt as to which material I am referring, it is
displayed in this blog post:

Yours sincerely,

Peter Jones
