Dear Mr Holmes,

BADGER CULL
Thank you for your email of 4 November about the Welsh badger cull. I have
been asked to reply.

On 8 April 2008, the Welsh Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones, announced a
plan of action to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in Wales. The plan
includes a one-off test of all cattle herds across Wales in order to
measure the extent of bTB; to remove all sources of the infection on farms
(including a targeted cull of badgers in a bTB hotspot, subject to strict
conditions); a review of the Welsh compensation system (based on
individual valuations); and consultation on a camelid strategy. More
recently the Welsh Assembly Government has announced that they would be
proceeding with a government coordinated badger cull within an Intensive
Action Pilot Area (IAPA).

Further details can be found at:

Bovine TB control is a devolved matter, and Wales has responsibility for
defining its own strategy for bTB control. For further information please
