6 May 2011

Dear Paul Raybould

Thank you for your two requests for information:

(a) dated 03 August 2010 concerning away days in 2008/09 and 2009/10 for
Directors and Councillors
(b) dated 14 January 2011 concerning away days in 2010/11 for Directors
and Councillors

This request is being handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

This letter is a full response to those applications following an Internal
Review. I apologise that there has been a delay in undertaking the
Internal Review and supplying the information.

Your request was to be supplied with "What Away days Corporate Management
have taken to undertake brain storming sessions, further training or
visits home and abroad to gain knowledge with the costs of each".

The Council does hold the information that you have requested.

We are very sorry for the delay in responding to your request for
information on away days that our Corporate Management Team (CMT) has held
to undertake brain storming sessions, further training or visits abroad to
gain knowledge in 2008/09 and 2009/10 and subsequently 2010/11.

Our policy is to reduce costs in this area wherever we can, especially
during a period of public expenditure reductions; while recognising that
it is sometimes important to go on a visit or hold a session where the end
result of the experience may mean saving money or improving services.

In 2008/09, CMT, which comprises our Directors, had eight what are called
away days in the sense that they are out of the normal office. These were
to look at longer term and cross council and partnership issues and
sometimes involved the next management group down, our Assistant
Directors. Three of these sessions were at premises we own, three at the
Theatre Royal in Plymouth and two at Plymouth Albion. The overall cost was
£772.

In 2009/10, there were six sessions with four held at Plymouth Albion, one
at the Holiday Inn in Plymouth and one in our own premises. Again, our
Assistant Director group attended some parts of these sessions. The
overall cost was £3,781, including £2,639 for the Holiday Inn
session which was a joint one with our Cabinet and included an experienced
facilitator from an outside improvement agency for the day.

During 2010/11, there were 13 away day sessions, nine of which were held
at our own premises, three at Sutton Harbour and one at Plymouth Albion.
The overall cost of these was £1,176, a figure that includes internal
charges where we used our own premises.

For the 2011/12 year these events have only been booked in our own
premises.

Once again may I convey our apologies for the delay in responding to your
information request.

Please note that the information supplied can mostly be re-used in
accordance with the Open Government Licence. The council should be
acknowledged as the source of the information, but copyright is maintained
for all photographs and third party contributions to the information
supplied. For further details see

I hope that we have supplied the information that you expected to receive.
If you wish to discuss this letter or the information that is supplied
then please contact me.

If you remain dissatisfied with the handling of your request or complaint,
you have a right to appeal to the Information Commissioner at: Information
Commissioner's Office,
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
