Award for ambulanceman
David Hansen made this Freedom of Information request to London Ambulance Service NHS Trust
The request was successful.
From: David Hansen
13 December 2010
Dear London Ambulance Service NHS Trust,
I refer to the article at
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/dec/12...
and in particular this bit
His mother added: "The ambulance man took us to Chelsea and
Westminster hospital. That [hospital] had been given over to police
injuries and there was a standoff in the corridor. Alfie was
obviously a protester and the police didn't want him there, but the
ambulance man insisted that he stayed."
She said that he was then asked to take Alfie to another hospital.
"The ambulance man was appalled and he said: 'I'm getting angry
now, and I'm not going to do this.'
Does the Trust intend to make an award to this man? It should.
Yours faithfully,
David Hansen

Dear FOI Admin,
My enquiry was simple enough. However I am not going to repeat it.
However, the "reply" from the "Head of Patient Experiences" does
not address my enquiry at all. Instead it answers a question I did
not ask.
That is a refusal to answer my enquiry.
Time for you to perform an internal review.
Yours sincerely,
David Hansen

Dear Mr Hanson
Mr Suter has suggested that it would be expedient to offer you a response to your initial request. I apologise for not doing so at the time but misunderstood your enquiry.
I can confirm that a commendation is not being considered.
It may be helpful to explain that the patient involved in the incident you refer to was located away from the main protest site by an ambulance crew who coincidentally came across the patient, rather than be directed as a result of a 999 call. This is known as a 'running call'. Not being primarily engaged in managing patients injured in the course of the protest march, the ambulance staff were not aware that a number of police officers had been conveyed to Chelsea & Westminster hospital and protestors to other local hospitals. No discussion occurred with the police although there was a discussion between the ambulance staff referred to in the media report you cite and local ambulance managers. It follows that the ambulance staff involved did not undertake any activity usually considered commensurate with a commendation.
I trust this now clarifies matters. Please also treat this as notification of the outcome of your commendation nomination.
Yours sincerely
Gary Bassett
