Average time taken for transsexual patients to complete pre operative laser and electrolysis hair removal

germaine gross made this Freedom of Information request to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

The request was refused by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

From: germaine gross

26 November 2011

Dear Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust,

Please would you be so kind as to tell me how long it takes a
patient to complete a course of 10 or 12 preoperative laser
treatments, and electrolysis, for hair removal of the genital area,
as required by Dr Bellringer on his web site ?

Since every laser session must be undertaken at least two months or
longer after the previous session, 10 laser sessions for
preoperative hair removal of the genial area would take at least 20
months. In many cases even more sessions are required, despite the
fact that this is not usual laser practice. The hair of the genial
area is extremely persistent and failure to remove it before
surgery would mean that the patient would then have to live with
hair inside the neo vagina for the rest of their lives.

Please would you be so kind as to inform me what the average time
is that patients take to undergo this treatment, as prescribed by
Dr Bellringer on his web site.

The simple calculation above does not include the excessive costs
involved in the treatment, which the NHS does not fund. Many
patients therefore will need to take far longer simply to find the
necessary funds. The costs of laser treatment and electrolysis are
extremely high, especially in specialist providers for electrolysis
and laser of the genital area. There are very few of these
providers and many NHS patients are forced to spend their entire
life savings on this treatment. This cost burden often makes the
process take far longer. The specialist that Dr Bellringer
recommends charge more than twice the national average for laser
treatment. Transsexual patients have virtually no choice of where t
access these treatments, since there are for example, only two
providers of electrolysis for this niche market in the entire UK.

Please would you tell me

a) how long the average patient tales to complete this mandatory
preoperative treatment, taking all the above travelling costs and
difficulties into account ?

b) the shortest possible time to complete this treatment, if the
patient has unlimited funds ?

A patient living on benefits, with an income of £70 a week has, at
maximum, a disposable income of £25 per week, if they deny
themselves proper food end all other usual living necessities. The
cost of specialist laser and electrolysis treatment combined with
the cost of travel from the North for each session would obviously
exceed their total income.

c ) Please would you tell, me how long you would expect such a
patient, living on £70 a week, and travelling from the North of the
UK for each session, take to complete the preoperative hair removal
as prescribed by Dr Bellringer for all his patients , when
travelling costs to London from the North or Midlands-are also
taken into account?

Yours faithfully,

germaine gross

I would consider intense pulse light (IPL). You can now get IPL home solutions such as VISS IPL, E-One and Philips Lumea.
