14 January 2011
Dear Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT),
1. What is the average length of time for an elderly (+65) person
to be discharged into:
a) Nursing Home
b) Residential Home
c) Assisted Living
2. How much does this average discharge time cost the Trust?
3. What is the average cost per night of stay (as an inpatient
waiting for discharge), for an elderly person at hospitals within
the Trust?
Yours faithfully,
Naeem Ahmad

Dear Naeem Amhad

from you.
Freedom of Information Team
From: Naeem Ahmad

Dear EDMUNDS Stuart, Freedom of Information Manager,
Thank you for your response.
To clarify, I am a provider of residential care (not in Devon),
however the query is currently in a personal capacity.
Question One Clarification
Point One
The period for the event is not from admission, but instead the
period from deciding an elderly person is to be discharged to them
actually leaving the hospital to either a,b or c. As highlighted in
Question two, Point one. – if the information is available, then
for the last 12 months or 24 months would be of use.
Point Two
The question does not relate to the type of condition for which
they were admitted, or their length of stay overall, simply as
point one stated.
Question Two Clarification
Point One
That is correct. However, the delay to discharging an individual
can include any reason that is not due to a medical complication or
additional hospital care to be administered.
Question Three Clarification
Point One
Thank you for raising this point. I wish to understand the costs
associated with the above delays in discharging an individual.
Therefore, if they do not need further hospital treatment, that
requires them to stay in hospital, then from that point, to the
point they were discharged, how much does this cost (regardless of
the original condition or reason they were admitted). You can
divide it on a daily basis (preferable) or quarterly or on an
annual basis. The period in question would be for the last 12
months (starting from today).
Point Two
The point refers to what it costs for them to stay as an inpatient,
after the decision to discharge them has been made. If care has
been provided, (probably the case if they need to in a nursing home
etc), then this needs to be included as well.
General Point Clarification
I appreciate it can be complex, however if the information is held,
distilled or otherwise it would be informative.
If you need any further clarification, I will be happy to oblige.
Many thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Naeem Ahmad
