Dear Rotherham Borough Council,
I believe that you have a waste treatment contract with Sterecycle
to auto clave waste. I am interested in the efficiency of this
process in comparison with other treatments and therefore have a
few questions to put to you.
Please can you tell me how much waste from Rotherham was treated in
2009-10 and what were the recycled and recovered outputs and their
weights (so I can establish percentages from the input). It would
help to understand what other recycling or other treatment (MRF?)
is used pre-autoclaving the material to get a rough idea of
composition of the input so please can you provide an outline of
pre-treatment of if available the composition of waste being
treated
within the auto clave.
Please can you also outline the amount of fibre and other outputs
and their destinations. I find the various EA waste waste codes
confusing so please can you explain in simple terms if material is
for example landfill cover or land filled.
As this is a request for environmental information please apply the
relevant legislation in answering it,
Yours faithfully,
Alice Massey

Dear Ms. Massey,
The attached spreadsheet should answer your questions regarding tonnage
inputs to and outputs from the Sterecycle autoclave facility in Rotherham.
There is no pre-treatment of this residual waste prior to its delivery to
the Sterecycle plant, however, we do have kerbside recycling schemes for
paper (the blue bag scheme), cans, glass & textiles (the blue box scheme)
and garden waste & cardboard (the green bin scheme), all of which will
reduce the amounts of these materials in the residual waste stream and
consequently affect the composition of the waste being treated.
For your information it has cost the Authority £76.75 to respond to your
request for information.
If you are not satisfied with this response you have the right to an
internal review by the Council. Please contact us via Sarah Corbett,

Dear Emma Hill,
Thank you for the information you have provided so far. It is very
much appreciated.
However, I would be grateful if you could provide the answer to the
destinations for the sterofibre /biomass (preferably without using
the various EA waste waste codes). So for example has this been
classified as perhaps "landfill cover" or "land filled"?
I realise it is a relatively new process and that classification of
outputs takes time, and required the EA input. Therefore if this
under evaluation can you perhaps state where you hope it will be be
used in the future (recovery of energy /bioethanol production etc)?
Yours sincerely,
Alice Massey

Dear Emma Hill,
Thank you for the name of what I anticipate is a landfill site it
is sent to, but please can you confirm this or not and explain what
happens to it when it gets there -is it land filled ie disposed of
or used as landfill cover as in recovery, or awaiting its
designation and end use /destination.
Yours sincerely,
Alice

Dear Ms Massey
The Cat Plant is a landfill site. The "Sterefibre" is being held on site
to be used as a soil improver in the restoration of the closed landfill
cells on that site once Environment Agency approval has been received.
This EA approval is expected imminently.
Yours sincerely
