Autism training in CAMHS

P. Smith made this Freedom of Information request to Department of Health

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for P. Smith to read a recent response and update the status.

From: P. Smith

28 February 2011

Dear Department of Health,

We have found out that our local CAMHS has no basic autism
training. Yet they are dealing with children with autism AS IF THEY
DO. Local parents say this finding does not surprise them. One
parent says that their CAMHS knows "Diddley squat" about autism.

We would like to know, please ...

Is there supposed to be a minimum autism training requirement for
all CAMHS staff in the UK?

What sort of training is this?

How do you check that staff have this minimum training requirement?
Are jobs advertised with this as part of the JD / criteria?

If not, why not?

We know of so many children / young people with autism who have
been damaged by the education system, and then this damage is
further compounded by (untrained in ASCs) CAMHS "professionals".

What are you doing about this?

We would like to see all CAMHS staff properly trained in autism, as
it is a complex, multi-layered and so very often misunderstood
condition - even by so-called experts / professionals.

Yours faithfully,

[P. Smith]

Dear Department of Health,

Quotes from parents:

“I always assumed (obviously wrongly) that CAMHS were expert on
Autism. That explains why so many people proclaim they are
useless!”

“We found out the hard way with our eldest that our CAMHS knew
diddly squat about autism.”

Yours faithfully,

[P. Smith]

Dear Ms Smith,

Thank you for your email of 28 February about Child and Adolescent Mental
Health Services (CAMHS) and training for autism.  I have been asked to
reply.

I notice that you have previously been in touch with the Department of
Health regarding the provision of care and support for children with
autism and their families.  As explained in our email of 27 July 2010, it
is for local organisations, including primary care trusts (PCTs) to assess
the needs of local populations and commission appropriate services.  This
includes services that have access to the knowledge and skills needed to
provide effective help to those children and young people who have autism.

The nature and level of training received by medical staff is a matter for
medical royal colleges rather than the Department of Health.  Royal
colleges have responsibility for setting syllabuses and standards of
medical practice.  The training received by mental health professionals
working for CAMHS will generally have been the responsibility of the Royal
College of Psychiatrists.  More details are available at
[1]www.rcpsych.ac.uk.

In addition, as explained in previous correspondence, the Department has
requested that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
prepare a clinical guideline in relation to the initial recognition,
referral and diagnosis of autism in children and adolescents.  The
guideline is due to be published in September (2011).

The Department for Education and Department of Health have a joint
programme in place to enable local authorities and PCTs to assess the
effectiveness of their local processes for assisting disabled young people
as they move to adulthood and adult services.  Every local area is
receiving funding and support to improve, and the aim is that every area
will meet minimum standards by the end of the year.
I hope this reply is helpful.
Yours sincerely,

Matthew Fluck
