Dear Sir or Madam,
Regarding the west side of Thornbury High Street, in the vicinity
of Wildings department store [14 High Street, Thornbury, Bristol
BS35 2AQ], please indicate for each of the financial years 2006/07,
2007/08, 2008/09 and for the first six months (April to September)
of the current financial year:
(a) the number of callouts to attend to members of the public who
fell on the pavement, and
(b) of these the number of times the incident required transporting
the individual to hospital for emergency treatment.
Yours faithfully,
David Martin

Dear Valerie Broach,
Thank you for your prompt response. Can you just clarify what your
reply means, please? Does it mean:-
(a) that your database does not hold data at the level of detail in
which I am interested; or
(b) that there are no recorded incidents, of this nature, in that
location?
If it is (a) then I would appreciate a suitable alternative. This
might be pavement trips anywhere in Thornbury High Street for the
same periods. Otherwise, perhaps you can indicate what options are
retrievable from the database for location and type of incident.
Yours sincerely,
David Martin

Dear Mr Martin
Our systems are set up to retrieve such data by date and location of
incident. Therefore unless the requester can supply more detailed
information regarding specific incidents we are unable to assist in any
meaningful way. Data relating to specific incidents also needs written
consent from the individual patient before we could release.
Data pre September 2008 is on the previous system which is not easily
accessed making it time and therefore cost prohibitive. It may be that
we can tell you how many times we attended that postcode since September
2008 but without a more specific location I am not sure this would meet
your needs - it will not tell you that it was outside Wildings
Department Store .
Even with consent a review of each paper record (again time and cost
prohibitive) would not necessarily confirm that the incident involved a
pavement fall. Such incidents could be described in a number of ways eg
fall, collapse, heart attack etc. I hope this clarifies to some extent.
If you would like us to try and retrieve very general information as
above - calls to the post code, please let me know.

Dear Valerie Broach,
Once again I thank you again for your quick reply.
I think we can find a suitable compromise, but let me first
re-emphasise two matters, that seem to have become confused.
(1) I have no interest in any personal details - I have asked only
for numbers of incidents, and that is not a breach of
confidentiality, nor does it infringe anyone's privacy.
(2) I want to know about trips, that is people stumbling because of
uneven pavements, so it does not include heart attacks, collapses
nor anything covered by "et cetera". If your classification of such
an incident is "fall" then that is acceptable to me.
To avoid a "time and cost prohibitive" search, I will accept a
response that is for falls, and for a period of twelve months. So
let me re-state my amended request, and I hope that this can now be
proceeded with ...
Regarding postcode BS35 2AQ, please indicate for the twelve months
From October 2008 to September 2009 (inclusive):
(a) the number of callouts to attend to members of the public who
suffered a fall, and
(b) of these the number of times the incident required transporting
the individual to hospital for emergency treatment.
Yours sincerely,
David Martin

Dear Mr Martin
Thank you for your reply.
A search between September 08 to date indicates 1 call to 14 High St,
Thornbury described as a fall.
I hope you find this information helpful.

Dear Valerie Broach,
Thanks for that. You did not state the year, but I assume the
search was from September 8th, 2008. Can you complete the second
part of my query, namely: did the incident involve transportation
of the individual to hospital?
[Again, I reiterate that I have no interest in personal details,
and I don't know, nor even need to know who this individual was -
the motive for my request is an allegation that the roots of two
trees have disrupted the pavement and therefore have become a
danger.]
Yours sincerely,
David Martin

Dear Mr Martin,
The year was September 2008 to date.
The patient walked away and the ambulance was cancelled, so no, we did
not transport in any way.
