Dear Sir or Madam,
Can you please supply me with the number of asthmatic cases in
Newham. Can you include an age breakdown and the number of new
cases each year since 1999. Can you also tell me the number of
cases within a mile radius of London City Airport.
Yours faithfully,
A Haughton

Newham PCT provided the following information to a request I submitted in Feb 09:
14,787 asthma sufferers prescribed medication in 2006-7 (source Compendium). This is the number of people that GPs have recorded as having asthma that requires medication.
It is 4.58% of the population vs England average of 5.77%
Age breakdown of sufferers – the PCT does not hold this information.
Mortality all ages 2005-7 pooled 3.1 per 100,000 standard European population (95% CI 1.71-4.48) (source Compendium) This rates was calculated from 20 deaths from asthma in 2005 to 2007
Ward area – mortality rates too low to provide meaningful ward level information.

This information will be held by the PCT - and it seems unlikely that there would be a huge cost in sharing data that is required to be collected and disseminated by the PCT on an annual basis in any case.
