Asbestos Management

Ben Whitehouse made this Freedom of Information request to Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School

The request was successful.

From: Ben Whitehouse

13 February 2012

Dear Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School,

The law of Control of Asbestos regulations 2006 requires a duty
holder to be responsible for taking reasonable steps to find
asbestos on their premises and assess the condition of these
materials.

Can you please tell me what steps have been done to comply with
this regulation? Who is your duty holder?

Has any asbestos been found in the school? What assessments have
been made of any asbestos found?

Who is responsible for preparing and implementing a plan to manage
any risks and providing information on the location and condition
of the materials to anyone who is liable to disturb them.

I request answers to the above and would like electronic copies of
all information in respect of your asbestos management planning,
locations of asbestos found within the school, what is being done
to encapsulate or remove any asbestos. Please include documentation
regarding any annual reinspection to monitor the condition of
asbestos from a professional perspective.

Yours faithfully,

Ben Whitehouse

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your FOI request with regard to Asbestos Management at our
School.

Our Official Duty Holder is David Iddon who is our Headteacher.

As with many Schools that have buildings of the same age ranges as ours
Asbestos has been found and we have a management plan to deal with this
(See Attached), this is updated and reviewed on a termly basis by the
School Business Manager in conjunction with the Facilities Technician and
the Senior Caretaker on site.

Risk assessments take place before contractors start work and a permit to
work is completed (See Attached).

This attached Management Plan is based on a full whole school survey that
took place in  2006. The report for that survey is 23.7mb in file size and
therefore cannot be sent electronically. Do you have a postal address that
you would like this sent to?

In addition to the above survey an additional contractors type 2 survey
was undertaken in 2009 and any asbestos removed from the site requires
certification that fibres are no longer present before the area is
declared safe.

If you require any further information with regard to this please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Many thanks

Graham
