Arrests for firearms by Borough

Andy Smith made this Freedom of Information request to Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

The request was successful.

From: Andy Smith

6 July 2011

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

For my university project I would like to know the total number of
arrests made for possessing firearms for the whole of the MPS. I
would like a breakdown by the london borough and the ethnicity of
the person arrested. Data to be put in Financial Years from FY
2001/02 to FY 2010/11.

Yours faithfully,

Andy Smith

I am sorry to inform you that we have not been able to complete our
response to your request by the date originally stated, which was due to
this department receiving a large number of requests over the last month,
with limited staff resources to deal with them.

I also regret to inform you that after reviewing the initial data produced
for a reply additional information was found to exist pertinent to your
request. Over the period you requested data for, a number of different
custody arrest record systems have been used and it was believed that only
counts covering the period of the current custody arrest recording system
still existed with the level of detail required. We have now identified
that some limited data from earlier versions of the custody record system
do exist and that it is relevant to your request. This data is currently
being extracted and reviewed.

I can now advise you that the target date for a response is 25/08/2011,
however, I will endeavour to try and release this information before this
date, if possible.

May I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this delay.

COMPLAINT RIGHTS

If you are dissatisfied with this response please read the attached paper
entitled Complaint Rights which explains how to make a complaint.

Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please
contact me on 0207 161 3131 or at the address at the top of this letter,
quoting the reference number above.

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

I understand that you have provided me with an extended deadline. I
note you are not considering a qualified exemption and therefore
have no legal basis to extend the deadline. I therefore request
that you deal with this request as a matter of priority and provide
me with the information I have asked for. I will have to refer the
case to the ICO if there are any more delays.
