Dear Sir or Madam,
Under the Freedom of Information Act please release all documents
or advice given to Schools about how to celebrate the first British
Armed Forces Day to be held on the 27th of June 2009.
This is a national matter and should have some guidance from the
department responsible nationally for education. If it has been
decided that no central advice or guidance is to be given, who made
that decision and why?
Has this department received any communications from the Ministry
of Defence on this matter, if so please release all related
documents.
Yours faithfully,
John Simpson

Dear Iain Campbell,
Thank you for your response to my Freedom of information request,
The reference number given was 2009/0040436.
You say the Ministry of Defence is preparing guidance for schools
on this matter. Under the Freedom of Information Act can you please
release all communications from the Ministry of Defence to this
department on Armed Forces Day and if possible provide a list of
which people in the department were sent information on it (not
names, but positions such as Secretary of State / Ministers of
state or just civil servants.
Also will the guidance for schools be sent to this department to
send to schools or will the Ministry of Defence be sending their
guidance directly to the schools? Will this include Independent and
religious schools and both Primary and secondary schools?
I hope you can help me with these issues.
Yours sincerely,
John Simpson

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The information you requested is not held by this Department. All communications
regarding Armed Forces Day were sent directly to the schools by the Ministry of
Defence (MOD) and not to this Department.
Through the MOD's free on-line teaching resource, Defence Dynamics (DD), the MOD
developed an Assembly Plan on AFD for schools to use, this included a full laid out
assembly plan with accompanying PowerPoint presentation and videos. Please find the
armed forces day assembly plan attached along with the PowerPoint presentation. The
video can be downloaded here:

There were 3 launch emails in total: (1) Primary and Secondary Heads (2) Heads of Art
(3) DD user base. 1 and 2 were sent to a generic school address marked for the
attention of a named contact. DD users would have received the email to their personal
address. The numbers for emails 1 & 2 are as follows:
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please remember to quote
the reference number above in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should make a
complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar months of the date of
this letter. Your complaint will be considered by an independent review panel, who
were not involved in the original consideration of your request.
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the Department, you may
then contact the Information Commissioner's Office
