Approximate Times of Death for Suicide by Hanging
Mark McCarthy made this Freedom of Information request to Office for National Statistics
Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Office for National Statistics should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Office for National Statistics,
I was wondering whether you could provide a list of approximate
times each of death for all suicides by hanging in England and
Wales from 2001 till 2010.
Yours faithfully,
Mark McCarthy.

Dear Office for National Statistics,
I would appreciate your help with provision of this data. One of
my best friends from school hanged himself in the early hours of
the morning and I have a suspicion that many people who commit
suicide are suffering from two symptoms of severe depressions
called early morning waking and diurnal mood variation which are
related to the more biological form of depression. I suspect that
many victims of suicide commit suicide in the early hours of the
morning when if they could be protected/watched at these times of
day then the number of suicides could be reduced significantly
especially in situation where the victim is being detained in a
hospital, prison or young offenders institute. Although hanging is
thankfully rare it is the one of the few forms of suicide where it
is possible to determine when the victim committed the act and
therefore would give a clearer picture of the most vulnerable times
of the day. Your help in gathering this data would be much
appreciated. If you can provide a larger samples size for example
by going back over as many years as possible this would be
appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Mark McCarthy

Our Reference FOI001357
I’m very sorry to hear about the death of your friend, this must be a very
difficult time for you. Unfortunately, I don’t think ONS will be able to
provide you with any data that would help you.
ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death
registration. Most suicides will have been certified following a coroner’s
inquest. So we use the information on the coroner’s death certificate to
code the cause of death using the International Classification of
Diseases. Although coroners occasionally record what time the deceased was
found and pronounced dead, they almost never record what time the deceased
actually died. ONS do not have access to post-mortem results, so
unfortunately we do not hold information regarding the specific time that
the suicide occurred.
ONS publish an annual report ‘Suicide in the United Kingdom’. Data up to
2009 can be found in Microsoft Excel workbooks on the Office for National
Statistics website at:
[1]http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/a...
This report will be updated with 2010 data on the 26 January 2012.
There is also and Injury and poisoning bulletin, due to be updated on the
23rd February, available via this link:
[2]http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/a...
ONS hold other information not included in the report, for example the
number of suicides by method, if that would be useful? Please feel free
to contact the mortality team directly ([email address]) if you would
like any more information.
I’m sorry I can't be of more help.

Dear FOI Team,
reference FOI001357. I have read the suggested links you have put
forward but none of them give any indication of Time of Death so
are of no help in my quest to evaluate if there is a link between
suicide and Diurnal Mood Variation. I understand the limitations of
the data collection process, however, if the sample size is
sufficiently large I may well be in a position to establish a
significant link between suicide and Diurnal Mood Variation. I
understand that due to the limitations of the data collection
process I am not have enough quality data to narrow down the risk
periods (if they exist), however, while I appreciate your kind
attempts to guide my request with your experience of the data, I
would rather draw the final conclusions on the quality and
useability of the data myself, having actually seen it for myself
and put it thru Minitab.
Could you please therefore provide with a table of data for all
suicides in the last 10 years with the ICD coding and time and date
of death or time and date of discovery discovery if available.
Yours sincerely,
Mark McCarthy
