Appointment of the Principal

Rob Smith made this Freedom of Information request to University of Glasgow

The request was successful.

From: Rob Smith

3 March 2011

Dear University of Glasgow,

Please provide some background information about the appointment of
Principal Muscatelli.

It would appear that Professor Muscatelli was 'invited' to take up
the post of Principal by Sir Kenneth Calman, the then Chancellor of
Glasgow University, with whom he had previously worked in his
capacity as the chair of a committee looking at Devolution as part
of the Calman Commission.

Was Professor Muscatelli the only candidate considered for this
post? if not, were any other candidates approached or interviewed
for the post?

Who was involved in the decision to award the Principal a £283,000
package of salary and benefits?

Yours faithfully,
Rob Smith

Thank-you for the information provided.

Please note that there is a slight inconsistency with this and information previously disclosed in respect of remuneration.

You have stated that 'The decision to award the salary package of the Principal was made by the University's Remuneration Committee, which comprises 3 lay (independent) members of the University Court.'

In response to a previous request (http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/ap...) you indicated that the principals remuneration would be determined by a Search Committee reporting to the University Court.

I note too, from your own website, that the Principal sits (though presumably in absence when his own salary is being determined) on the Remuneration Committee.
