University of Oxford
13 August 2010
Dear Shamimur
Thank you for your email.
Please note that the deadline for applications for courses starting in
2010 was 15 October 2009. If you would like to know how to apply for entry
in October 2011, details are set out below.
Choosing a course
The full list of undergraduate courses available can be found at
[1]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/courses. You will see that we offer a degree in
Engineering Sciences, but not one specifically in Electrical Engineering.
Please see UCAS search website at [2]www.ucas.com/search/index.html for
other institutions which do offer Electrical Engineering.
Entrance requirements
Competition for places at Oxford is very strong, and you would need to
have, or expect to obtain, qualifications equivalent to AAA at A-level in
order to make a competitive application. If you are studying the
International Baccalaureate you would need to a level of performance
around 38-40, including core points, with 6s or 7s in the higher subjects.
We do not use UCAS points.
For information on other qualifications please refer to
[3]www.ox.ac.uk/undergraduate/international_students/international_qualifications.
If your qualifications are not sufficient for you to make a competitive
application then you may wish to consider taking A-levels or the IB. For
further information about institutions offering these qualifications in
your country, you may wish to contact your local British Council
([4]www.britishcouncil.org) or the International Baccalaureate
Organisation ([5]www.ibo.org). The first year of a Bachelor's degree from
another university may also be an acceptable alternative.
Please note also that there are specific subject requirements for some
courses. You can check the details at on the `Entrance requirements' tab
of the page for your course, by visiting
[6]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/courses.
English language
All teaching at the University of Oxford is carried out in English, with
the exception of some language-specific teaching, and tutors must be
convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English
to cope with your course from the start. Therefore, all non-native
English-speaking applicants (other than those who have been educated in
the medium of English language during their two most recent years of
study) must satisfy one of the following requirements:
* IELTS: overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four
components)
* TOEFL (paper based): overall score of 600, with a Test of Written
English score of 5.5
* TOEFL (internet-based): overall score of 100
* Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): grade A
* Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English (CPE): grade B
* English Language GCSE, IGCSE or O-level: grade B
* International Baccalaureate Standard level (SL): score of 5 in English
* European Baccalaureate: score of 70% in English
* German Abitur: score of 12 in English
If this is not achieved at the time of application it will form part of
any conditional offer, and must be met by the August after applying.
Choosing a college
Oxford University is made up of many different colleges, where
undergraduate students live and study. If you wish to apply to a
particular college, you may do so. However, you do not need to choose, as
you can make an open application, which means that your application is
allocated to a college that has relatively fewer applications for your
subject in the year you apply. For further information please see
[7]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/colleges.
Finances
For information on fees, funding and scholarships, please see
[8]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/finance.
Applications
Applications are made to Oxford University online through a central
service called UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service), which
deals with all applications to higher education in the UK. Please see
[9]www.ucas.com.
Candidates complete an online application form in which they list up to
five university courses they wish to apply to, and provide details of past
academic performance, predicted grades for any pending qualifications and
a personal statement. The personal statement is where the candidate
outlines their reasons for wanting to study the subject they have applied
for. There is also a section where teachers provide a reference.
When applying to Oxford, or for Medicine at any UK university, you must
submit the application by 15 October of the year before entry. Please note
that for some courses applicants are required to sit an aptitude test
and/or to send in examples of written work as part of the application.
Please check the procedure for the course that you are interested in at
[10]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/courses.
Tutors will read the UCAS application and take into account the
candidate's academic achievements, the personal statement, the teacher's
academic reference and, for many courses, examples of written work and the
results of an aptitude test. A shortlist will be made and applicants who
have been successful at this stage will then be invited for an academic
interview in December. If you are unable to attend, for example if it is
difficult for you to obtain a visa at short notice, an interview by
telephone or video-link may be offered, at the discretion of the college.
Please note that offers are not made without interviews.
Please also note that candidates may not apply to both Oxford and
Cambridge in the same admissions year.
For further details of the application process, please see
[11]www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/apply.
