Dear James

Many thanks for your freedom of information request, received by email on
Friday, 30th December, 2011. Please accept my apologies for the delay in
acknowledging your request but the University closed for Christmas on the
22nd December and only re-opened today.

We will now consider your request and you will receive the information
requested within the statutory timescale of 20 working days as defined by
the Freedom of Information Act 2000, subject to the information not being
exempt or containing reference to a third party.

For your information, the Act defines a number of exemptions which may
prevent release of the information you have requested. There will be an
assessment and if any of the exemption categories apply then the
information will not be released. You will be informed if this is the
case, including your rights of appeal.

If the information you request contains reference to a third party then
they may be consulted prior to a decision being taken on whether or not to

c) The number of students who commenced the course for a reason
other than: a UCAS application, a direct application, "clearing",
"adjustment".

I anticipate that the best way to provide this information is to
have a spreadsheet divided up into the individual years, and each
year in turn being divided up unto the individual courses (which
must have their course code next to them).

Dear James

Further to your freedom of information request below, received on the 30th
December 2011.

1. Information Prior to 2010

The University operates a data retention policy for admission application
records of "proposed year of entry" plus one year for unsuccessful
applicants. This means that we do not hold detailed information for
unsuccessful applicants prior to the 2010 entry cohort. The information
you are requesting may be available from UCAS, who are also subject to the
Freedom of Information Act for some of its functions. Perhaps you could
consider contacting them directly for specific UCAS data - information on
how to make a request to UCAS can be found here:-

2. 2010 / 2011 applications

I can confirm that Bangor University holds some of the information you
requested but having discussed the matter with Admissions Office
colleagues accessing that information would take a considerable amount of
staff time. This information falls under the exemption in section 12 of
the Freedom of Information Act relating to the appropriate limit
prescribed in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate
Limit and Fees Regulations 2004) which states that where a request will
cost more than 18 hours @ £25 per hour (£450) the request may be refused
on these grounds.  As a result we will not be responding to your request
and this email acts as a formal Refusal Notice in accordance with Section
12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

If you wish to significantly refine and resubmit your request so that it
reduces the cost to within the limit then please contact me. The following
questions from our Admissions Team may assist:-

1. Is your request limited to full time undergraduates or are
applications to Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) also
required (this latter group also apply throught he UCAS GTTR system)?

2. Would you include those applicants who have been reported to UCAS
under the RPA (Record of Prior Acceptance) as UCAS applicants or direct
applicants?

3. Does your "standard deadline" refer to the UCAS standard deadline (as
applied each year) or the University's working deadlines for considering
applications for each course?

4. Are deferred applicants who change their minds about year of entry
(before or after the "to be agreed" deadline) to be considered once
only, reflecting their initial application or to be treated separately
within each of your defined categories?

5. Would you wish the information to reflect applicants who subsequently
(i.e. after the standard deadline) change course or withdraw their
applications?

6. Are questions 3a and 3b to limit the information to just those that
commenced the original course applied for or should the naswers include
those who transferrred course between their original application and the
date of first registration?

Please note that the University has a formal complaints procedure. If you
are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request
and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision you
should write to The Registrar, Bangor University, College Road, Bangor,
Gwynedd LL57 2DG explaining the grounds for your complaint.
