£700k pa of costs against the £500k projected annual saving, a deficit of £1.2m

I wonder where exactly these savings are going to come from?

29 September 2011

Dear University of Glasgow,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of
Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of University of
Glasgow's handling of my FOI request 'Annual Cost of MyCampus'.

This is because:
1. David Newall on numerous occasions, as recorded on this site,
has claimed that the implementation of this system will result in
saving of £500,000 per year. You now tell me that you do not know
the annual cost of MyCampus.
Without knowing the annual cost of MyCampus how did David Newall
know that there would be an annual saving of £500,000? Please speak
to him as he must have known the recurrent cost of MyCampus before
making such a claim.

2. Replying to another FoI request:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/61...
You released the following information
“Campus software maintenance – following purchase of the above
licences a software maintenance contract then provides support from
Oracle including the provision of ongoing new releases. The annual
cost of this maintenance is £264,473 per annum.”
You now say that the support cost is £160,000 per year. Which
Figure is correct?

3. I have found it very difficult to believe that you have not
budgeted for the consultancy costs.

Finally, a while ago you claimed:
“The Project Board, chaired by David Newall, Secretary of Court,
has responsibility for costs and these are recorded and monitored
in accordance with the governance structure.”
See:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/wo...

Considering the fact that you cannot account for the cost of this
project I wish to suggest that the project Board, chaired by David
Newall, have failed miserably.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is
available on the Internet at this address:

Yours faithfully,

Wolfram Bayer

GU Eyes left an annotation (27 October 2011)

“The system is outdated and cumbersome to use. The software has been developed using Cobol programming language (Cobol is nearly 60 years old and no longer is used by major software houses). The software has been heavily customised by UoG IT staff and external consultants. The on-going cost of support and enhancements of these customisations will be astronomical as each time the supplier releases a new version of the software all these customisations must be modified to work with the new version of the software.”
See:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/glasg...

Now we know why the University refuses to disclose the annul cost of MyCampus. They know that such a disclosure will create an academic community backlash against the Management.
