Dear Kent County Council,
Can you tell me how much Kent CC spent on flower beds and bedding
in the last tax year. A comparative figure for the total spent in
the previous year would also be much appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Sinead

Kent County Council

Dear Ms Carroll
Thank you for your request for information regarding the costs spent on
flower bed planting and the total upkeep.
As part of its responsibility to maintain the public highway KCC arranges
the maintenance of grass, shrubs and hedges on highway verges. The work is
carried out directly through contractors or on our behalf by District or
Parish Councils.
In areas where maintenance is carried out by a contractor working direct
to KCC, we do not pay for flower beds or bedding.
In areas where the work is directed by a local council, KCC reimburses
that council for maintaining shrub beds, cutting grass and hedges. We are
aware that some local councils, parishes or community groups occasionally
plant highway verges with flower beds and bedding or even place containers
with bedding on highway land. However, we are unable to advise you how
much District Councils, Parishes or local community groups may have spent
on flower beds and bedding in 2009/10 or 2010/11 or whether the work was
funded from their general funds or from payments received from KCC.
Therefore you will need to contact the district councils for this
information. Please see the following links for information about Council
services in Kent and a list of District Councils:

[3]If you are unhappy with this response, and believe KCC has not complied
with legislation, please ask for a review by following our complaints
process; details can be found at this link

on our website. Please quote reference FOI/12/0172.
If you still remain dissatisfied following an internal review, you can
appeal to the Information Commissioner, who oversees compliance with the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. Details of what you need to do, should
you wish to pursue this course of action, are available from the
Information Commissioner’s website
