Dear Hywel Dda Local Health Board,I would like to know the total
amount of monies paid to dentists in the Ceredigion area for the

Dear Ms Pugh,

Following your supplimentary question about the number of patients
treated, I asked the officer concerned and was informed that we currently
only have a global figure that shows the number of patients seen in
Ceredigion in the previous 24 months, as at the end of June 2010 was
40,135. The Health Board does not have an annual breakdown available.

Yours sincerely

Dear Bob Mander (Hywel Dda Health Board - ),again, thanks for your
prompt reply. Does the number of patients seen by the Ceredigion
dentists include private patients as well as NHS patients. If it
does can you please let me know the exact number of NHS patients
who received treatment. If the total contracted value of payments
to dentists in the Ceredigion area was £3,300,674 there must be an
account showing how and why this figure was reached.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Bob Mander (Hywel Dda Health Board - ),Thank you for the
information which you have sent to me which really only confirms
what I already know. Regarding the list of dentists in Ceredigion I
would like to point out that you show two dentists trading as
"denticare" in Aberystwyth. I would like to point out that the
"denticare" knOwn as Friars Dental Surgery is strictly a private
concern and accepts no NHS patients. In view of this am I correct
in assuming that even PRIVATE DENTISTS ARE FINANCED BY HYWEL DDA
HEALTH BOARD. If so, why?

Yours sincerely,

emily veronica pugh

Dear Mrs Pugh,

I am informed that Private dentists are not funded by the Hywel Dda Health Board. Denticare in Friars Park do have a small NHS contract.

Dear Bob Mander (Hywel Dda Health Board - ),when I spoke to
denticare in Friars Park I was told that they do not accept NHS
patients they only treat private patients. Their website is called
Dental Spa - this does not sound like NHS. Perhaps you could
clarify the position for me.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Bob Mander (Hywel Dda Health Board - ),Thank you for
forwarding a copy of the Dentists' contract. I would like to have
your comments regarding:
1. Two dentists in Ceredigion DO NOT ACCEPT ADULT PATIENTS. iN FACT
THEY OPERATE A PRIVATE PAYMENT SCHEME. They only accept a small
number of children - but children under 16 receive free dental
treatment. Are these dentists still being paid by the LHB.
2. If dentists do not operate a patient registration scheme then
how does the LHB reach a figure of 40,135 patients who received
dental treatment in the past two years?
3. The National Assembly now spends in excess of £130 million a
year on NHS dental services (I have this in writing from the
Minister), but the population of Wales is only 3,008.848 and of a
population of over 74,000 in Ceredigion only 40,135 people received
dental care in the past two years. Taking all the figures into
account it is obvious to me that the bulk of the money allocated to
dental services is not being spent on dental care patients. Any
comments? Emily

Dear Mrs Pugh,
I take it you meant your email of the 24th, following the delivery of a blank dental contract to yourself, as I have no knowledge of a letter from you of the 13th. Regarding your email of the 24th, unfortunately, unless your email contains a question for which we have written material that we can provide, I am not in a position where, under the Freedom of Information Act, I can make comments on the contents of an email. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

19 November 2010

Dear Mrs Pugh,

In answer to your queries in your email of the 24th, I have received the following information.
1 Dentists may see a small number of children within their practice on an NHS basis and whilst this dental treatment is free to the patient there is still a cost to the Health Board to pay the dentist for providing this work. The contractor would only be paid by the LHB for the work completed on an NHS basis.

2 The figure of 40,135 is recorded from the FP17 forms which is the form that the patient signs when they attend the dental practice. The Business Services Authority can therefore monitor the number of patients who have attended an NHS dentist.

3 The Health Board uses the dental allocation to provide dental services to patients across the three counties and access sessions are available to those who do not have regular access to a dentist.

I trust that this answers your queries.

Yours sincerely.
