Allotments

Andy Weir made this Freedom of Information request to Newquay Town Council

Waiting for an internal review by Newquay Town Council of their handling of this request.

From: Andy Weir

31 October 2011

Dear Newquay Town Council,

Please could you provide me with the following information with
regards Allotments in Newquay: -

Newquay Town Council is under two Statutory and hence mandatory
obligations, in respect of demand for allotments:

i to provide a sufficient number of allotments ; and
ii to let these to folk who wish to take them.

1. How many parliamentary electors (if any) have made written
representations to Newquay Town Council that allotments are wanted
in that area?

I am number 127 on Cornwall Council's waiting list for allotments
in the Newquay area.

2. Is Newquay Town Council currently pro-active in seeking land for
allotments?

Yours faithfully,

Andy Weir

Dear Mr Weir

With reference to your request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act, please find below responses to your questions:

1) I am aware that Newquay Town Council has received 3 letters from
parliamentary electors requesting allotments in the area.

2) At present we as a Town Council are not proactively looking to
compulsory purchase land to provide allotments, as I understand the
situation; we are not duty bound to perform such an exercise until
such a time as six registered electors have made representations to
the Town Council, requesting allotments.

However, having said that, I am now in contact with the Local MP
(Steven Gilbert) and also Cornwall Council to try and arrange a
meeting in February/March 2012 between all interested parties and
the South West Representative of the National Society of Allotments
and Leisure Gardeners Ltd.

The purpose of such a meeting is to attempt to empower those who
wish to have an allotment to find suitable land in the area, and,
by working with the representative and the Town Council, to
consider acquiring suitable land for the purpose of allotment
provisions in Newquay. If your name is on the list Cornwall Council
hold, you should receive a letter in due course about this matter
(I have requested this and attach the draft letter from Cornwall
Council, which will be sent out on our behalf shortly).

I trust this answers your questions.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Curtis Town Clerk & RFO
