Dear Margaret,

As of January 2010:

1) There are 9 allotment sites which we manage and have waiting list
data for. There are a further 9 sites run by churches and parish councils
which we do not have data for.

2) There are 720 plots on these 9 sites. These are not all full sized
plots. The plots are of various sizes. In the last three years, the number
of plots has risen from about 550 to 720 mainly due to the renovation of
derelict areas and creation of new plots in formerly unused parts of the
sites (e.g. unused scrub land). There has also been some division of
larger plots.

3) There are approximately 560 people waiting for plots. The wait
ranges from a few weeks at two sites to as much as 7 years for one site in
particular which is in an area of very high demand and low turnover of
plots.

4) We keep our waiting lists open so that we can accurately
understand the demand for allotments within the Borough.

5) We have not opened any new sites to date because the focus on the
last two or three years has been in ensuring that all currently available
land has been put to good use through the actions described in the answer
to question number 2. With 53 new half-sized plots created in Autumn 2009,
following drainage of allotment land that was unlettable due to flooding,
the process of maximising existing space is coming to an end and we are
now looking at various options for the creation of new sites during 2010.

Please contact me if you require further information.

Kind regards,

Fiona
