Dear Bristol City Council,
As of January 2010, please could you tell me:
1) How many allotment sites are there in Bristol for which Bristol
City Council has access to waiting list data?
2) What is the total number of plots on these sites?
3) What is the total number of people on waiting lists for these
sites?
4) Are any of these waiting lists closed to further applications?
5) How many new council allotment sites were brought into use in
2009? Please give:
a) number of new sites
b) names of new sites
c) total area of new land in hectares
d) total number of new plots
Yours faithfully,
Margaret Campbell

Dear Bristol City Council,
I wrote to BCC on the 1st January requesting data on allotment
waiting lists (see below). I haven't yet had a respose to this,
even though by law, the authority should normally have responded
promptly and by 1 February 2010. I would be very grateful if you
could follow this up.
My request was as follows:
"1) How many allotment sites are there in the council area for
which the Council has access to waiting list data?
2) What is the total number of plots on these sites?
3) What is the total number of people on waiting lists for these
sites?
4) Are any of these waiting lists closed to further applications?
5) How many new council allotment sites were brought into use in
2009? Please give:
a) number of new sites
b) names of new sites
c) total area of new land in hectares
d) total number of new plots"
Many thanks,
Margaret Campbell

F.A.O. Margaret Campbell.
Margaret. The response to your FOI enquiry concerning allotments is as
follows:
The information that you have requested can all be obtained from the
Bristol City Council allotments website, www.bristol.gov.uk/allotments
and is therefore already publicly available, including the no of plots
and the length of waiting lists for specific sites. The lettable sites
are all listed, with 4 exceptions which I have listed below. I can
confirm that there are no sites whose waiting lists are closed, although
there are a few where we actively discourage people from going on those
lists, either because of the small size (one has only 2 plots so
allowing a long waiting list is pointless), or because they are
unsuitable as allotments in their current condition (one has no topsoil
so we allow only poultry keeping on these plots, so would only keep a
specific waiting list of people wanting plots for that purpose). In
addition, one site (Craydon Grove) is only accessible through houses so
could not have an open waiting list, whilst we have only recently taken
over Clancy's Farm from Housing Services and are in the process of
producing new tenancy agreements for the existing tenants. The plots
available and the waiting lists of the 4 sites not shown on the website
are as follows: -
Craydon Grove 6 plots, 5 let, one under offer, 2 on waiting list
Clancy's Farm 5 plots all let, no waiting list
Stanley Terrace 2 plots all let, 21 on waiting list
Brooklea 28 lettable plots, 6 on waiting list
Those that do not have the number of plots and a waiting list shown
have a waiting list managed by an allotments association or Plot Letting
Site Representative, so we do not hold the waiting list information.
With regard to new sites, although we have not created any new sites,
we have brought the following plots back into use that were previously
overgrown or let as grazing: -
Bourchier Gardens 13 plots
Woodcroft Road 6 plots
Whittock Road 5 plots
Bourchier Gardens 13 plots
Bath Road 30 plots
The Allotment Strategy adopted on 30th July 2009 has identified 9.3
hectares of open spce land to be earmarked for potential future
allotments, subject to local consultation. In addition, there are still
various sites with grazing land that could be returned to allotments as
and when demand increases in those areas in future.
I trust that this information is of assistance to you.
This response should answer your request in full, however if you are
not satisfied with this response or wish to lodge an appeal against any
exemptions that may have been applied, you can do so by writing to the
