Dear Margaret

Thank you for your request for information which is supplied below and
attachment.

1. Southampton City Council has 23 allotment sites (some are divided
into East/West) and there are waiting lists for all these sites. I have
attached the latest information accurate as of today. This shows how
many plots and the number on the waiting lists for each of these sites.

2. None of our waiting lists are closed. The waiting list for some sites
in the Millbrook area is decreasing as some plots have become available
recently but numbers waiting for plots on all other sites are increasing
slightly or the same.

3. There were no new allotment sites brought into use in 2009 but there
was an unused area on Weston allotments where ten new plots (2036 sq m)
were created, and grazing land was taken back on Muddy Bottom West
allotments and fourteen plots (3200 sq m0 created.

4. There are plans to open two new sites, enlarge an existing site and
clear another area in Weston Allotments to create approx 20 new plots.

I hope this is the information you require, additional information can
be found on the allotment pages of the Southampton City Council website.
Please contact me directly if you require any further information.

The information in para 3 in response to a request for information about Allotment waiting lists as of January 2010 requires amendment. Contrary to the statement that no new allotment sites were brought into use in 2009 and that grazing land was taken back at Muddy Bottom West allotments and fourteen plots were created,in fact there had been no allotments in this area of Sholing Common since 1988 or earlier, this area being given over to horse grazing from about 1990 up until termination in February/March 2009 when allotments were created. The fourteen plots referred to are those immediately outside my house, which were imposed upon my family without warning or discussion. At the same time as these plots were created, others were created on the part of Sholing Common that extends down the valley to an area which remains as horse grazing, and yet more were created at the Bursledon Road end of Sholing Common where other horses were evicted. Unfortunately many of the fourteen allotments referred to in the response from Southampton City Council are let to families with (probably about 26)children who tend to use the allotments as gardens and for childrens play groups and play areas. The land does not require fertilisation since the occupants can be seen to provide their own.
