Dear Miss White
Thank you for your recent query about the number of youth's deaths related
to alcohol over the past 5 years, specific to Southampton or Hampshire.
There were no deaths of under 18 years olds with alcohol-related underlying
cause in (a) Southampton unitary authority or (b) Hampshire county between
2004 and 2008 (the latest year available).
This Answer is based on the ONS definition of alcohol-related deaths, which
was published in July 2006. The background to this definition can be found
at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget..... The definition does
not include deaths from external causes (apart from alcohol-related
poisoning), for example accidents where drinking might have been a
contributory factor. Please see the table below for the list of causes
included in the alcohol-related deaths definition:
Alcohol-related causes of death – International Classification of
Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10)
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| ICD-10 code(s) |Description |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|

|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| I42.6 | Alcoholic cardiomyopathy |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| K29.2 | Alcoholic gastritis |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| K70 | Alcoholic liver disease |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| K73 | Chronic hepatitis, not elsewhere classified |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| K74 (excl. | Fibrosis and cirrhosis of liver (excl. Biliary |
| K74.3-K74.5) | cirrhosis) |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| K86.0 | Alcohol induced chronic pancreatitis |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| X45 | Accidental poisoning by and exposure to alcohol |
|----------------------+-------------------------------------------------|
| X65 | Intentional self-poisoning by and exposure to |

The latest data on alcohol-related deaths in the United Kingdom in 2008
were published in January 2010. Figures are available from the Office for
National Statistics website at
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/Pr.... This link
also provides figures for England broken down by age. These figures show
that there were 3 deaths in England with an alcohol related underlying
cause for persons aged 1-14 between 2004 and 2008.
