Alcohol-related admissions of underage patients

Edward Randell made this Freedom of Information request to University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The request was successful.

From: Edward Randell

26 October 2011

Dear University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to know how
many patients under the age of 18 (at the time of admission) have
been admitted to University College London Hospitals during the
last five years (2006-2011 to date) for reasons wholly or partly
attributable to alcohol.

I would like the data to be broken down, if possible, by the
patients’ conditions, classified under their International
Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-10) as set out by the World
Health Organisation.

Of the above patients, I would also like to know

1) How many of the total were under the age of 16 at the time of
admission;
2) How many of the total died in hospital.

I would prefer to receive this information electronically.

If one part of this request can be answered sooner than others,
please send that information first followed by any subsequent data.

If you need any clarification then please email me. Under your
section 16 duty to provide advice and assistance I would expect you
to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way so
we can negotiate how best to proceed.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have
received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you in
the near future.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Randell

Dear Theodora Brocke-Afful,

The spreadsheet file you sent appears to be corrupted. Please could
you check there are no problems with it at your end, and try
resending once more, or else send it as a different type of file? I
have tried opening it on different operating systems with different
versions of Excel, but all I get is a meaningless string of
symbols.

Thank you for your continued assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Randell

Dear Mr Randell

Apologies for this. Please see text taken from the attached documents below.

Request:
Alcohol-related admissions of underage patients:
I would like to know how many patients under the age of 18 (at the time of admission) have been admitted to University College London Hospitals during the last five years (2006-2011 to date) for reasons wholly or partly attributable to alcohol. I would like the data to be broken down, if possible, by the patients' conditions, classified under their International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-10) as set out by the World Health Organisation. Of the above patients, I would also like to know

1) How many of the total were under the age of 16 at the time of admission;

2) How many of the total died in hospital.

Response.
2006-2011 to date

ICD-10 Count
F100 86
F101 18
F102 2
F103 1
F108 1
X450 1
X454 4
X459 2
X659 2
Y154 1
Y158 1

1) 32
2) 0

Note: The attached Data shows the number of admissions that are related to alcohol. Where the code is F100, this admission is directly due to alcohol as it denotes acute intoxication. For other admissions alcohol is part of the reason but it is not necessarily the main reason for admission and should not be treated as such. The inclusion of ICD-10 code reflect those codes which denote alcohol as part of a diagnosis but these are not necessarily the primary diagnosis code and maybe one of the secondary reasons.
See attached

Hope this helps.
