Dear Melizza,
Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Information Request 2479
I refer to your email dated 26 July 2010, which contained a request for
information. Following consideration of your request, and in accordance
with the Freedom of Information Act, I respond as follows:
Number of children who have been forcibly adopted against parental consent
and wishes since 2006
Children cannot be `forcibly' adopted without a court order or parental
consent to the adoption of the child. In the majority of cases the Court
considers if the parents can and have made the changes they need to be
able to parent their children safely. If the Court decides the parents
have not or cannot do so, a Care Order and Placement Order is granted,
giving the Local Authority permission to place the child for adoption, the
court having dispensed with the parents consent. The Local Authority
cannot place a child without this consent, although parents
sometimes later request that they `sign the papers'' to consent to the
adoption themselves. Parents also approach the Local Authority and ask
that their children be placed for adoption.
The number of children placed for adoption since 2006 is as follows:
2006/2007 14
2007/2008 17
2008/2009 20
2009/2010 15
I hope that this information satisfies your request. If you are
dissatisfied with the handling of the request, please write to:

I've just read the response of my Council, (Bridgend), to your request for information about the number of forced adoptions it has been responsible for. Based on my past experience of its self-complacent attitude, it's claim that there is no such thing as a 'forced' adoption is not surprising.
A Williams
