Dear Ms Moore

Freedom of Information Act 2000 – Information Request - 000142/12

With regard to your Freedom of Information request received on 30 January
2012, please find our response below.

Question

If a adoption placement breaks down, do the birth parents automatically
gets notified. If not, could you explain why ?

If a child is placed for adoption but an adoption order is not made and
this placement is disrupted, the birth parents will be notified, even if
only as part of the review process, as they still have a level of Parental
Responsibility (PR).

If the disruption occurs many years after the adoption order is made, Hull
City Council may be aware of this to take appropriate action.  If the
Council are informed, the situation would be assessed and a discussion
would be made with the adoptive parents, who may still have Parental
Responsibility.  We may also talk to the child, if appropriate, with
regards to what they want and also take into account the birth parents
situation.

As most adopted children and birth parents have some letterbox contact, we
recognise the need for them to have some information about their child on
a regular basis and we usually act on this.

We hope that you will be satisfied with our response and should you
require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact
us.
