Dear Ms Moore

I am writing to you in reply to your Freedom of Information Act request to
Nottinghamshire County Council regarding adoption breakdown. I have the
following information.

If the adoption breaks down after the court has granted an adoption order,
then the birth family would not automatically be notified. This is because
the adoption order transfers parental responsibility from the birth
family, and the local authority, to the adoptive parents, who then have
entire parental responsibility.

If no order has been made and the child was therefore not adopted, then
the birth parents should be informed of any change in placement.

If you have any queries or concerns then please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision,
you should write to the Team Manager, Complaints and Information Team,
County Hall, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 7QP or e-mail
[email address].

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint or review, you
may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.
Generally, the Information Commissioner cannot make a decision unless you
have exhausted the complaints procedure provided by the Council. The
Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
