Admissions Policy

F.L. Hunter made this Freedom of Information request to University of Strathclyde

The request was successful.

From: F.L. Hunter

20 February 2010

Dear University of Strathclyde,

I would like a copy of your Undergraduate Admissions Policy, along
with minutes from any meetings over the last three years where
changes to this policy have been discussed.

I would like a copy of the standard letter you send making an offer
(conditional and unconditional) to a prospective student; and a
copy of the standard letter you send rejecting an applicant.

I would like you to confirm the average time taken to respond to
Undergraduate applicants last year, with details of whether this
varies depending on the type of offer made; or whether there is
variation across the different academic areas of the the
University.

Yours faithfully,

F.L. Hunter

Dear Mr/Ms Hunter

Thank you for your request (below) under the Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002 regarding student admissions. The answers to your
individual questions are given below:

"I would like a copy of your Undergraduate Admissions Policy,
along

with minutes from any meetings over the last three years where

changes to this policy have been discussed."

The University of Strathclyde's Admissions Policy can be found at

[2]http://www.strath.ac.uk/media/department...

An undergraduate admissions review took place in 2008 and was approved by
University Court in November 2008 where it was agreed that a new
admissions policy would be developed. A copy is attached (attachment
1). Various themed policies which were specific to particular areas were
developed or revised between December 2008 and June 2009, during which
time a Development Officer with responsibility for Admissions Policy was
appointed and started in May 2009. From June 2009, reference was made to a
"High Level" Admissions Policy which was to be developed. Attached are
extracts from the minutes of the Admissions Management Committee meetings
from June 2009 - December 2009 where this policy was developed and
discussed: (attachment 2).

"I would like a copy of the standard letter you send making an offer

(conditional and unconditional) to a prospective student; and a

copy of the standard letter you send rejecting an applicant."

The University of Strathclyde does not communicate undergraduate decisions
directly to prospective students. All decisions are formally communicated
electronically, directly to UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions
Service), who then update the candidate's online UCAS Track Account. The
University of Strathclyde therefore does not hold
an offer or rejection letter which
could be provided in response to this part of the request.

" I would like you to confirm the average time taken to respond to

Undergraduate applicants last year, with details of whether this

varies depending on the type of offer made; or whether there is

variation across the different academic areas of the

University."

All applicants to the University of Strathclyde receive an e-mail
automatically on receipt of the electronic transfer of the application
form from UCAS. The e-mail details that their application is being
processed by the University.

The average time an applicant has to wait before they receive a decision
is between 5 and 18 days although some courses take substantially longer
if the selection processes includes an interview. Therefore there can be a
variation across different academic areas with respect to response times
for decisions. The type of offer made may influence the time taken to
receive a decision.

I hope this information is of help to you.

Yours
