Admissions data for the intake of private and state school pupils at the University of Sheffield
Leanne Rinne made this Freedom of Information request to University of Sheffield
The request was successful.
From: Leanne Rinne
5 September 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to know what percentage of students admitted to the
University of Sheffield in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 were from
state schools and private schools.
I am news editor of the student newspaper at the University of
Sheffield and am writing an article about how (some) top
universities are accepting state school pupils with lower A-level
grades than pupils from private schools.
A spokesperson from the University of Sheffield has told me that
the University of Sheffield do not take into account a person's
school background, and that I should file a FOI request to gather
the data I need to support this.
Comparative data will add critical evidence to my article. I
believe it is important for current and prospective students to be
aware of the University of Sheffield's admissions policy.
Yours faithfully,
Leanne Rinne

The University of Sheffield always endeavours to respond to requests as
soon as is practicable, but as you will be aware, 20 working days are
allowed under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in which to reply. In
this case that will be by Monday 5th October 2009.

Dear Ms. Rinne,
Thank you for your request for information concerning percentages of
students admitted to the University in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 from
state and private schools. 2006 and 2007 entry data is available from
the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) website. Because this
information relating to 2006 and 2007 is already publicly available via
the HESA website the University is exempt from providing it under
Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act - information accessible to
the applicant by other means. For ease of reference the links below will
take you directly to the information you require for the specific years.
2006 entry
The data is available as spreadsheets named table T1a, T1b and T1c at
the URL below
http://www.hesa.ac.uk/index.php/content/...
2007 entry
The data is available as spreadsheets named table T1a, T1b and T1c at
the URL below

The University is also exempt from providing the 2008 and 2009 entry
data under Section 22 of the Act - Information intended for future
publication. For official student numbers at the end of an academic
year, the 31st July is used as a census date. This is to ensure all
institutions across the UK are in a position to report data to
Government and its statutory bodies and that the data reported is fit
for purpose. The 31st July census population is provided to the HESA
with the data subjected to standard validation checks. The HESA then has
its own schedules for publishing data. According to its published
schedule, the release of 2008 entry data is likely to take place in
April 2010, although this may be subject to change - see
http://www.hesa.ac.uk/content/view/1530/... for the publication schedule.
I am required under the Freedom of Information Act to inform you that if
you have cause for genuine complaint regarding the way your request for
information has been handled under the provisions of the Act, you should
write to the FOI Unit, University of Sheffield, 285 Glossop Road,
Sheffield S10 2HB or email [University of Sheffield request email] explaining why you are
not satisfied with the result.
Your complaint will then be the subject of a full Administrative Review
by the FOI Unit followed, if appropriate, by referral to the Complaints
Panel of the University FOI Group for further consideration. If you
still remain unsatisfied with the University's decision, you will be
entitled to complain to The Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.
Yours sincerely
Matthew Zawadzki
