Administrative status of uninhabited islands

W Cooper made this Freedom of Information request to Parliamentary Boundary Commission for Scotland

The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wondered if you would be able to advise me on the administrative
status (i.e. both the local authority area and electoral ward) for
each of the following islands? They do not appear to be marked on
your maps (understandably) but presumably they must fall under one
area or another?

(a) North Rona
(b) Sula Sgeir
(c) Sule Stack
(d) Sule Skerry
(e) The St Kilda group
(f) Rockall

Yours faithfully,
Mr W Cooper

Dear Mr Cooper,

Thank you for your query of 18^th February 2009 regarding the
administrative status of a number of uninhabited Scottish islands. I can
tell you that as a result of the Fourth Statutory Review of Electoral
Arrangements carried out by the Commission in 2006:

o North Rona/Rona and Sula Sgeir are territory of the Na h-Eileanan an
Iar (The Western Isles) Local Authority and counted as being within
the boundary of Ward 9: An Taobh Siar agus Nis.
o The St. Kilda islands are territory of Na h-Eileanan an Iar Local
Authority and counted as being within the boundary of Ward 2: Beinn na
Foghla agus Uibhist a Tuath
o Sule Stack and Sule Skerry are territory of The Orkney Islands Local
Authority and counted as being within the boundary of Ward 4: West
Mainland.

The Island of Rockall Act 1972 formally recognised Rockall as being
territory of Scotland and of the then County, Inverness-shire. The Local
Government (Scotland) Act 1973 transferred administrative control to the
Local Authority now known as Na h-Eileanan an Iar in 1973. During the
Fourth Statutory Review Rockall was not formally designated as being part
of any electoral ward.

Kind Regards,

Craig Cunningham
