Dear Sir or Madam,
Please could you provide the following statistics relating to
magistrates' courts in England and Wales (divided into petty
sessions area) for the past three years:
1) Number of defendants tried summarily following a plea of not
guilty;
2) Of the defendants tried, the number acquitted at half time,
following a submission of no case to answer;
3) Of the defendants tried, the number acquitted after trial.
Please provide a breakdown of the figures in as much detail as
possible, including but not restricted to: a) youths b) adults c)
category of offence d) gender of defendant e) tried by district
judge or lay bench.
