Our response:
Following the Scottish Government's announcement in June 2009 on changes
to Scotland***s National Qualifications to reflect the values, purposes
and principles of Curriculum for Excellence and to foster skills for
learning, life and work, SQA as one of the partners involved, has been
working on policy and guidance on the design, assessment and quality
assurance of the new National Qualifications. During the period May 2010
to date, full documentation concerning the development of qualifications
has been published on the SQA and partner organisations' websites.
We have provided links to these pages below:
* New Qualifications support the Aims and Purposes of Curriculum for
Excellence

* New Qualifications follow design principles

* Quality Assurance process

Taken together, these documents provide the blueprints for developing the
new qualifications, outline aims and purposes, information on what the new
qualifications will look like, what they will achieve and the
specifications they will adhere to; make recommendations on the scope,
skills and issues within each curriculum area; outline the subjects that
fall within each curriculum area and the subjects, levels and types of
qualifications which will be developed and the proposed content for the
new qualifications.
The Review of Courses Co-ordination Groups (ROCCGs) oversee the quality of
the final qualifications. The internal SQA review group (iROCCG) has a
particular focus on proactively monitoring progress on the
***front-ended*** quality assurance. The external review group (eROCCG)
has a particular focus on strategic matters and issues of overall
coherence, balance and consistency across qualifications. The decisions
made by these Groups are recorded in action grids and acted upon as
appropriate. Relevant documents are attached for information. Progress
reports on the development of New National Qualifications are also
considered by other SQA groups and committees but these groups do not have
a direct decision making role in the development process.

Curriculum Area Review Group activity and engagement reports
The purpose of the first round of engagement was to seek advice on the
nature of the technologies curriculum area. This included seeking views on
skills that cut across all technologies and teaching approaches that work
well across the area. It was also to explore any perceived issues with
existing courses in the area. This was to inform the production of the
Curriculum Area Progress Report.
The purpose of the second round of engagement was to seek views on the
courses that should be developed to support the aims and purposes of
Curriculum for Excellence. In particular to provide a smooth transition
from the broad general education and further progression into higher
levels of study, employment or training. This was to inform the production
of the Curriculum Area Overview and Suites of Courses document.
The role and remit of the Curriculum Area Review Group (CARG) is published
on the website at [6]http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/38541.html. It provides
strategic advice and guidance across the curriculum area.
