Dear Mr Gilmour

Freedom of Information

I am writing in reply to your Freedom of Information request which has now been dealt with under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

You asked for copies of any documentation held by the DVLA with respect to proposals to replace the UK Drivers Licence with a National ID Card.

During initial discussions on the feasibility of introducing identity cards many options were considered, including what type of information the card would hold.

DVLA Policy Branch would have filed this information, if held, within its "Identity Card Issues" files which has 45 parts. Other branches within the Agency may also hold papers relating to identity cards. Initial searches have failed to uncover any information relating to your request.

After careful consideration, we judge that widening the search would be unlikely to be more successful and would in any case incur further costs, in excess of the appropriate limit of £600. Section 12(1) of the Act removes the obligation upon a public authority to do so where they estimate the costs would exceed the appropriate limit.

If you are unhappy with the decisions made by this Agency in relation to your request, you may ask for an internal review. If you wish to complain, you should write to Mr Wynne Jones, Business Planning and Administration Group (BPAG), D16, DVLA, Longview Road, Swansea SA6 7JL or email to xxxxx.xxxxx@xxxx.xxx.xxx.xx.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:

Information Commissioner's Office

SK9 5AF

If you have any queries about this letter, please contact Wynne Jones. Please remember to quote the reference above in any future communications.

Yours sincerely
