Dear Mr Metcalfe,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your email of 14 July which you ask for the monthly statistics on the Identity and Passport Service’s (IPS) correspondence in relation to the National Identity Service.

Your request has been handled in accordance with the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. We are now in a position to offer a full reply to your request.

You requested the monthly statistics for correspondence for the period April 1st 2006 to August 2007, specifically including:

-          A complete listing of the “themes” allocated to letters

-          The number of letters allocated to each theme.

Please see the separate attachments.

The volume of correspondence about identity cards is recorded each month. The detail of the correspondence received is recorded by theme. The list of themes is not exhaustive and can be added/amended to as required. One letter can generate multiple themes.

If you are dissatisfied with this response you may request an independent internal review of our decision by submitting your complaint to:

Information Rights Team
Information and Record Management Service
Home Office
4th Floor, Seacole Building

During the independent review the department’s handling of your information request will be reassessed by members of staff who were not involved in providing you with this response.

Should you remain dissatisfied after this internal review, you will have a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner as established by section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yours faithfully,

On behalf of James Hall, Chief Executive & Registrar General
