Dear Ms Susan Davis
Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Ecological protection scheme for road verges - FoI 480496
Thank you for your enquiry dated 16th March 2009 regarding
Ecological protection scheme for road verges.
Please find below information regarding Ecological protection scheme for road verges.
There are no formal ecological protection schemes for road verges in Brent, but examples of practical action include:
TfL / Brent Local Implementation Plan 2007-08 included projects for improving the biodiversity of road verges and adjacent streetscene areas. This involved projects around the Borough involving tree, bulb, and wildflower planting; and related projects.
Street tree planting by StreetCare.
The Council's contractors and the Parks Service take environmental issues into account when managing verges.
Daffodil and other bulb planting on verges by the Council and community groups including the large scale planting along Fryent Way.
Search for 'London Wildweb' or at www.london.gov.uk/wildweb for near road Local Sites (Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation) including the Kingsbury road bank.
For our NI 197 scoring of the above, please refer to http://www.brent.gov.uk/pks.nsf/Biodiversity
NVC: We have not surveyed verges to NVC (National Vegetation Classification) yet. Most will however be regularly mown, on drained, made-soils, though the underlying soil is London Clay over much of the Borough. Many verges may possibly key out as MG7 or be unclassified under the NVC. There are localised areas where verges include acid grassland.
There may be particular local projects on verges, Council or community based, that are not detailed in this response.
I hope you find the information useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries.
If you are dissatisfied with the response or how the Council has handled your request you can complain to the Council by writing to the following address: Corporate Information Manager at Brent Council, Room 105, Brent Town Hall, Forty Lane, Wembley, Middlesex HA9 9HD, telephone 020 8937 1156, e-mail [Brent Borough Council request email]. It is the Council's policy to ensure that, where practicable, your complaint is dealt with by someone who was not involved in the original decision.
You also have a right of appeal about our decision to the Information Commissioner, however, the Information Commissioner will not normally consider an appeal until you have exhausted your rights of redress and complaint to the Council. The Information Commissioner can be contacted as follows:
Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF; Telephone: 01625 545 700, www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk
