Beckton Question time
Winsor Park Community Centre
26 January 2009
Opening by `Gallions Primary School Choir'
Points discussed:
Closure of North Woolwich Police Station - if crime is rising, why is it being closed?
Residents were informed that the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson is closing it down and that Robin does not want it to be closed. The local councillors are trying to keep it open.
Also the station is actually used for the Airport police not local ones. City Airport is policed by the Met Police - can the residents get some back for local policing???
ACTION: Robin to write a letter to Richard Gooding at London City Airport regarding the above.
Refuse collection has got worse!
Social Entrepreneur - requiring a building to use.
Robin explained that he is willing to support leaseholds not freeholds. He believes it is not a good idea to support freeholds as assets should stay within the council.
Neighbourhood watch Team - More people, better lighting=less crime!
Robin shared the good news that we have paid for 5 Safer Neighbourhood teams in our borough and we will treble the number of police officers.
Parking - UEL students parking on our streets, blocking driveways, parked on dropped curbs making it difficult for disabled residents.
Action: Write to Boris Johnson to ask if he is responsible for the closure of UEL's car park if so, why and if we can re open it if possible.
Parking on Pavements LBN got it wrong we'll see how we can wave these tickets.
CCTV - New Control Room - looking at each area seeing what our biggest issues are - simple things like lighting makes a place safer.
Mosquito's - There is still a high level of mosquito in Beckton, what can we do about it?
Action: Look if we can do something about the level of mosquito's
Recycling - Orange bags collection system not working and RW admitted this however he is putting in a new system.
We have reduces the amount going to landfill according to the East London Waste Authority.
