Dear Mr Tyes

Freedom of Information Request.

I write with reference to your email of March 5th 2009, in which you make the following
request:

“Please confirm how many children are on the child protection register, and which register,
broken down by age and gender and number of children per household, what their family
background is (do they live with both parents, or in a separated family living with father and
step-mother, grandparents etc), and how many of the children that were on the register a year
ago have since died.”

Your request has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act and I can confirm that
we do hold the information requested.

As at February 2009, there were 382 children who have a Child Protection Plan.  Of those
382, there are 190 boys (49.7%) and 174 girls (45.5%). There are 18 children (4.7%) where
the register does not show the gender.

The age breakdown of the children is as follows:

< 1
1 - 4
5 - 10
Age
year
years
years
11 - 15 years
16+ years  Unknown

7.6 26.4  35.9
24.6
1.6  3.9

There have been no deaths of children who were on the Child Protection Register one year
ago.

In order to provide a breakdown of how many children per household and information relating
to the make-up of each household would require us to retrieve and examine each record. We
have estimated that to extract and collate this information would cost more than the
appropriate limit, therefore we are refusing this part of the request under s.12(2) of the
Freedom of Information Act.

The appropriate limit is specified in regulations and for local government is set at £450 as
specified by The Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)

Regulations 2004. It is Cambridgeshire County Council’s policy not to fulfil any requests that
exceed this limit. I have attached our charging policy for your information.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to
make a complaint or request a review of our decision, you should write to Helen Maneuf,
Head of Audit, Scrutiny & Information Governance, Box RES 1405, Shire Hall, Cambridge
CB3 0AP within 40 days of the date of this response.

If you are not content with the outcome your complaint, you may apply directly to the
Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless
you have exhausted the complaints procedure provided by the Council. The Information
Commissioner can be contacted at: The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely
