Dear Mr Brown,
I am writing with reference to your request for information regarding the
management of the domain name; ‘police.uk’ under section 1(1) of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.
You asked for the following information:
1. Please would you release an electronic copy of the rules covering the criteria for
approving a police.uk domain name?
2. Please would you provide a list of all domain names registered in the police.uk
sub-domain?
3. Please would you identify on the list provided in response to
(b) above, which of the domain names are used/operated by
organisations which have a limited company status (i.e. are not police forces, police
authorities, local authorities or government departments or agencies).
Our responses are as follows:
1. The NPIA manage the ‘police.uk’ domain name on behalf of ACPO and
ACPOS. The name exists for the benefit of policing in the UK and any
‘policing’ or ‘policing related’ organisation may be granted a police.uk domain
name.
Applications for domain names are submitted with the approval of an officer
of ACPO rank or their equivalent who will sign the request. Applicants are
asked to identify the name requested, the reason for the request and state
the governance of the organisation if not a formally constituted body and
identify their ISP/nameservers.

There have been no disputes to resolve and there are no formal Dispute
Resolution Procedures. Should a dispute arise the NPIA’s relationship to the
organisations involved would allow for the matter which is disputed to be
resolved through informal means. This would involve the Domain Manager
liaising with the managers of the sub-domain (or person requesting the
domain name) directly and on either being unsatisfied with the response
escalating this through the chain of command.
These are the rules by which the domain is managed and their simplicity
reflects the modest and mostly static nature of the business. This allows
applications to be made and changes to the domain name delegation
completed without cost to forces.
2. The attached list displays the registered domain names.
3. The majority of names provided can be seen to be directly policing related.
The company status of the organisations which are not police forces, police
authorities, local authorities or government departments or agencies is not
known to the NPIA.

We take our responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act seriously but, if
you feel your request has not been properly handled or you are otherwise
dissatisfied with the outcome of your request, you have the right to complain. We
