Dear Mr. Roberto
Freedom of Information Request 53712
I refer to your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Your request was:
I am researching 'blue plaques' which are erected on historic buildings by local authorities in the UK.
In response to a query, English Heritage mentioned to me that such a scheme runs in Liverpool & Merseyside.
Could you confirm whether such a scheme is running, or has run in the past?
If so, could you provide a list of blue plaques that have been erected in the city, if available? Preferably this list would include as much information as possible, including the inscription on the plaque, the location of the plaque and the date it was erected, and would be provided in a spreadsheet or 'comma separated values' format.
In response, there was a colour-coded scheme in operation up until 2005 involving approximately 80 plaques recognising famous people, historic buildings and former sites. This was maintained by a local Heritage Bureau administered by the Planning Department. Since 2005 the variously coloured plaques have been selectively replaced by new black-faced plaques (with stone rims) according to the attached list. The network has been expanded to recognise the original Seven Streets in Liverpool so that approximately 100 black plaques have been installed. Some have subsequently suffered from vandalism.
Since the replacement programme was finished a complete record has not been kept of the inscriptions on each plaque, though locations and subject are listed. What we have is contained in the attached list. As new plaques are added we are recording full inscriptions.
I trust that this information satisfies your enquiry,
Yours sincerely
Carl Winstanley
