FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST 1361-2009
I write further to your request for information received by Kent Police on 16th February 2009, in
which you asked for information concerning arrests made during Operation Oasis. I am
conscious that this response arrives with you some considerable time after the twenty working
day time limit permitted to a public authority to provide a response and for the lateness of this
response we apologise. We have already explained in previous correspondence that this unit
has been experiencing staffing difficulties and a recent rise in the number and complexity of
requests. I am pleased to say that these issues are now approaching resolution and we hope
to be able to resume normal service in the near future.
In your request you asked for the following information
Question: What proportions of the people included on the Operation Oasis protester database
were:
(a) arrested during, or after the event (the 'Camp for Climate Action'),
(b) charged with any offence,
(c) subsequently convicted?
Section 1(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 states the following:
1 General right of access to information held by public authorities
(1) Any person making a request for information to a public authority is entitled—
(a) to be informed in writing by the public authority whether it holds information of the
description specified in the request, and
(b) if that is the case, to have that information communicated to him.
I have conducted searches within Kent Police and consulted with senior officers involved in the
Operation to police the Camp for Climate Change at Kingsnorth Power Station in 2008 and we
can confirm that Kent Police do not have a database that answers the description as specified in
your request and therefore this information is not held. Consequently, it is not possible to
consider your supplementary questions. Therefore, and in accordance with the Act, this letter
must act as a refusal notice for your request.

During the duration of the camp for Climate Change, which lasted for just over a week at the
end of July and the beginning of August 2008, there were 100 arrests of 99 persons (one
person was arrested twice.) 46 people were charged, 22 were cautioned and three were bound
over. One person was remanded for breach of bail. The list of offences and the dates, and the
numbers of people detained for them, is included in the table at Appendix 1.
