Dear Mr Hood,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000

Thank you for your email dated 10 February 2009 to the Department for Transport requesting the following:

“In explaining the decision to let traffic wardens issue fines to motorists after they have driven away, (before a parking ticket can be physically placed on their car or handed to the driver), Transport Minister Rosie Winterton said this change was vital because "some people will drive away very quickly if they see a parking attendant approaching… and that can be dangerous for other drivers and it can be dangerous for pedestrians."

“Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 would you tell me how many accidents were caused by drivers quickly driving away from traffic wardens (or parking attendants) that prompted this change in the Law?

“Please confine your answers to the 12 months prior to the change in the Law on 31st March 2008. However, if you have the details, also include separately the 10 year period immediately before the change. Additionally, of these accidents, how many resulted in:

a) death?

b) serious injury?

c) minor injury?

I am dealing with your request under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

Yours sincerely

Mr Jeaur Rahman
