Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act (‘the Act’) dated 17 March
2008 seeking information about the BBC iPlayer. The reference number for your request is
RFI20080274.
You have requested the following information:
How much did it cost to build BBC iPlayer and how long did it take?
Please see below the following information in response to your request:
We can confirm that the BBC iPlayer project has incurred £6.0m to develop so far and is built on
the BBC's continually developing technical infrastructure.
The BBC iPlayer was developed in stages over the past few years. The basic BBC iPlayer (then
called myBBCplayer) trial completed in June 2006. During June 2006 - November 2006 the BBC
iPlayer Beta was developed with very limited functionality & user access.
On November 14th 2006 BBC launched a limited user access version. Then during November
2006 to July 2007 the BBC developed the beta version of the BBC iPlayer with a walled garden
access.
In July 27 2007 the BBC iPlayer Beta was launched. Then during July 2007 to December 2007 the
BBC developed the full BBC iPlayer product. On December 25 2007 the BBC publicly launched
the BBC iPlayer product.
